PE.240 VOLUNTEERISM AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

The “Big” Questions

What is giving and why do we (or not) do it?

Do we need giving in a society?

Who gives, how and why?

Course description

This course provides key perspectives in volunteerism including historical function, volunteer organizations and social movement in Thailand and Western society. It aims to encourage students to understand concepts and processes of volunteer works. Students undertaking this course will be able to have self-direct learning skill through engaging in volunteer works in organizations in Bangkok and municipality under supervision of both lecturers and representatives from organizations.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, students will:

  1. Understand concepts of volunteerism and its historical function in Thailand and Western society and the critical debates relating to volunteerism.

  2. Understand the current landscape of volunteerism in Thailand and aboard.

  3. Understand volunteer practices from first-hand experience in organizations and be able to give critical reflection on their volunteer experience.

Learning assessment

Lecture: 12 Hrs

Working as a volunteer in selected organization: 66 hrs
